March 31st marks World Backup Day. What a perfect time to check that there are backups of all your precious data! Remember also to check that you can restore the information if needed.
3-2-1 backup rule
The classic rule for setting up backups is the 3-2-1 rule. It states that you should have:
- three copies of data
- on two different media
- and one of the copies should be off-site.
One copy is the master copy, for example, on your laptop disk or in the storage space of the production environment. At least one backup should be on different media: for example, on an external USB drive, DVD, or in a cloud-based backup system. And finally, one of the backups should be off-site.
Off-site can be at another office, in the cloud, or even in another geographically separated cloud environment depending on where your original data resides.
If disaster recovery is essential for you, you can also check the Unitrends blog. The article introduces the concepts of 3-2-2 and even 3-2-3 backup strategies.
Backups in the kitchen
Backups are needed in baking, too. Maybe you have your best recipes on paper, so they’re always available? And many people keep basic ingredients always in the cupboard in case they can’t go to the grocery store.
I have a sort of backup bread. If I don’t have any bread at home or I want something nice for an evening snack, I often bake tea bread. The original recipe is from my comprehensive school cooking book, but I have modified it a bit.
Backup banana muffins
When I want something sweeter, I whip up muffins from the ingredients at home. If you have some fruit, raisins, nuts, or leftovers of yogurt, you can whip up tasty muffins in half an hour.

I had pretty ripe bananas at home, so I decided to bake banana cocoa muffins. These muffins are simple to make. You will need:
- 2 eggs
- 1.5 dl sugar
- 100 g pastry margarine
- 2.75 dl flour (both wheat flour and gluten-free flour mix work)
- 1.5 tsp vanilla sugar
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 dl milk
- 1 banana
Mix the eggs and sugar into a foam. Pour in the melted margarine. Mix the dry ingredients first together and then into the dough mix with the milk. Cut the banana into small pieces and mix it with the dough.
Preheat the oven to 200 ºC. Pour the dough evenly into a muffin pan. The dough is enough for about 12-16 muffins. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy the muffins while running backups!
